Athens authentication ‘network failure’ error message

We’re getting reports of intermittent problems when users are trying to logon to eResources using their Athens credentials. In particular, users are getting the following error messages:

Temporary network failure

….which after repeated attempts to re-enter their ID and password is followed by…

No return URL

If the user goes back to eSearch to start again, when they next try to access the eResource then no Athens prompt is presented and they are automatically taken straight in to the service. This suggests that the original Athens authentication attempt was successful, but had given the user an incorrect response message.

We’ve reported this to Athens, and we’ll give you a further update when we get confirmation of a fix. In the meantime, Athens authenticated services are still accessible, but users are likely to be confused by the misleading error messages.

New resource: Violence and Abuse Abstracts

Access to Violence and Abuse Abstracts on the EBSCOhost platform has been made available through eSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by Athens username and password off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

Violence and Abuse Abstracts includes bibliographic records covering essential areas related to violence and abuse, including family violence, sexual assault, emotional abuse, and other areas of key relevance to the discipline.

‘Other Passwords’ page changes

In addition to the change to the ISURV username and password reported in the last eServices eResources Update, the usernames and passwords for the following resources have recently been updated on the ‘Other Passwords’ page:

  • Brand Republic
  • Child abuse, welfare and adoption
  • Cipfastats
  • EGI
  • Ibsedex
  • Just-style
  • Media lawyer
  • Mergent Online
  • Solicitors Journal
  • Tunnels & Tunnelling
  • Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory
  • WGSN

New platform: Informaworld Journals

The publishers Taylor & Francis are in the process of amalgamating all of their online content into a single platform: Informaworld. At present, previous access routes to T&F content are being maintained while the new platform is embedded but these are scheduled for withdrawal in due course.

Access to all of the ejournals LLR subscribes to from Taylor & Francis, Routledge, Carfax and Psychology Press has now been enabled in Informaworld via SFX.

Informaworld supports both inbound and outbound OpenURL linking. However, inbound SFX linking is only possible to the journal title rather than the article level – so the boxes for Year, Volume, Issue and Start Page are not presented in the SFX menu (see illustration below), as they have no effect on the ability to ‘drill down’ below the title level directly from an SFX request.

Access is direct on-campus; with an Athens username and password required for off-campus access. Off-campus users need to click on the SIGN IN and then the athens sso links before entering their Athens username and password (see illustration below).

Access to full-text ejournal content on Informaworld for which LLR has a subscription may be either Full or Partial.

Where full-text access is available to all of the issues provided by Informaworld, a single icon will display below the bibliographic data indicating that ‘You have ACCESS’ (see illustration below).

Where access to full-text content is Partial, the icon beneath the bibliographic data will indicate ‘You have PARTIAL ACCESS’ and an additional ACCESS icon will appear next to each issue for which full-text content is accessible.

Outbound OpenURL linking is provided through the references section of ejournal articles – when these are presented in .html rather than .pdf format. Clicking on the [your library’s links] link (see illustration below) will generate an SFX menu based on the metadata of the reference. In other words, you can submit a reference from an article straight to SFX to see what services are available from SFX for that material (It is hoped to be able to customise the link text shortly – changing it to Find it @ NTU.)

Please be aware that it is currently not possible to search Informaworld remotely through eSearch; and the Informaworld platform is not Cross-Ref enabled (so SFX cannot process DOI requests for Informaworld content directly from Citation Linker).

LLR’s collection of 180 Taylor & Francis eBooks is available through Informaworld as well as through the etailer.dpsl.net platform, and future resource discovery options for this content are now being assessed, as part of the wider developments on eBook discovery.
