Emerald – Shibboleth authentication working normally

The problem affecting Shibboleth authentication on the Emerald service (reported on 19 March) was resolved shortly afterwards. Shibboleth authentication is working normally again on the Emerald Insight platform.

Off-campus access to Emerald – Shibboleth problem

Emerald’s technicians are working to resolve an issue which is preventing some off-campus access login requests (using Shibboleth) from resolving successfully.

Where the problem occurs, a customer sees the error message “Institution login could not be completed” once they have attempted to login to the service from off-campus.

While their investigations continue, Emerald have provided us with a temporary username and password which NTU staff and students can use to access the service from off-campus. This account will be active for the next seven days, and can be used simultaneously by different staff members and students – these details can be requested from the eServices team.

These details must be entered in the Emerald login boxes on the top-left hand corner of the main Emerald Insight interface.

These temporary account details can be shared with staff members and students as required in the event of Shibboleth login problems.

A further update will follow once Emerald have confirmed that Shibboleth based authentication is working normally once again.

Delegated Centres Access to Emerald Restored

Emerald have now confirmed, that the access problems we have been experiencing form the Delegated Centres page has been resolved.
Access from our Delegated Centres page for Internet Explorer users has been tested and works fine, Firefox is still gives a security prompt. However, it is ok to accept this and click continue and log on as normal.

Off-campus access to the Emerald platform is now by university username and password (using the Shibboleth framework). Links and prompts in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly.

A guide to Shibboleth authentication on the Emerald platform has been added to the eServices Support wiki.

Members of relevant Delegated Centres and NTU Alumni will continue to use an Athens username and password to access the Emerald service.

eServices will continue to monitor the situation

Delegated Centres Access to Emerald

Currently there is a problem with access to Emerald via the libraries Delegated Centres web page. This has been reported to Emerald, and they have confirmed that the problem lies at their end.
Their IT department are working on this, and expect to implement a fix early next week.
As a temporary work around they have issued us with a direct Athens login link:

http://www.emeraldinsight.com/Insight/athenslogin.jsp

I’ve requested that the current link from the Delegated Centres page be updated with the link above as a matter of urgency.
In the meantime either, click on the link or copy and paste it into your address bar, then enter your Athens Username and Password.

Please note: This direct URL worked fine in Internet Explorer, but you receive a security warning in Firefox. Therefore, it’s advisable to use Internet Explorer until this problem is resolved.

We will continue to work with Emerald for a speedy resolution to this problem

Emerald – restricting searches to full-text subscription content

Following a number of recent customer queries about access to full-text content on the Emerald platform, it may be helpful to clarify that LLR only subscribes to a proportion of the full-text content available on the Emerald platform rather than the entire of the collection.

Once a customer is logged in (by IP on-campus or by Athens username and password from off-campus), content that is not available in full-text will be indicated by the display of a ‘padlock’ graphic in the results display (see illustration below).

Emerald results lists showing 'padlocked' full-text content

When searching, it is possible to set a search limit in the native Emerald interface so that only results within ‘My subscribed content’ are returned (see illustration below). This means that all of the returned results will be available to a logged in NTU customer in full-text; and any that are not available in full-text will be suppressed.

Emerald – metasearch working again in eSearch

A technical problem which was affecting remote and metasearching of Emerald in eSearch earlier this week has now been fixed. Emerald searches are now returning results in eSearch normally.

Emerald: functional problems with ‘Marked lists’

Emerald’s technical team are working to rectify problems affecting the functionality of the ‘Marked Lists’ service within Emerald (through which customers select and save search results in their personal account space within the Emerald interface). Emerald hope to have these problems resolved shortly. In the meantime, please contact eServices if you’d like any more detailed information about the nature of the functional issues involved.

Emerald – remote and metasearching re-enabled in eSearch

Remote and metasearching of the Emerald platform has now been re-enabled in eSearch following the deployment of a second updated search configuration.

Emerald – remote and metasearching suspended in eSearch

Ex Libris are working on a new search configuration for remote and metasearching of the Emerald full-text service in eSearch, following changes in the platform introduced this week. As with JSTOR, LLR will activate the new configuration as soon as it is made available. In the meantime, remote and metasearching of Emerald FullText has been temporarily suspended in eSearch.
