ICE Virtual Library Archive: off-campus access restored

Off-campus access to the ejournal content in the ICE Virtual Library Archive has now been restored following a recent interruption in service. Access on-campus remains direct; with off-campus access by university username and password. It has proved possible to re-establish off-campus access to this content following a series of upgrades on the ICE platform. Because the ICE Virtual Library is not yet Shibboleth compliant, off-campus access is made available via eZprozy. ICE expect to be able to support Shibboleth based authentication in the near future, when LLR will migrate to full Shibboleth authentication for the service.

The ejournal content provided through the ICE Virtual Library Archive is as follows:

* Transactions of the Institution of Civil Engineers (1836-1842)
* Life of Telford (1838)
* Minutes of the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers (1837-1935)
* ICE Engineering Division Papers (1942-1951)
* Journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers (1935-1951)
* Proceedings of the ICE Parts 1 and 2 (1952-1991)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Civil Engineering (1992-2001)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Municipal Engineer (1992-2001)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Structures & Buildings (1992-2001)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Transport (1992-2001)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Water Maritime & Energy (1992-1999)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Geotechnical Engineering (1994-2001)
* Proceedings of the ICE – Water and Maritime Engineering (2000-2001)

In addition to this archival access, LLR has current subscriptions to a number of ICE journal titles. An audit of LLR’s electronic holdings entitlements for these titles is currently underway.

FORS – off-campus access re-enabled

Off-campus access to the FORS (Forensic Science Service) has been re-enabled, following a technical configuration problem reported earlier this week. Off-campus access is available once more using a university username and password.

Knovel: access restored

Access to LLR’s subscription to Knovel has been re-enabled. Links in eSearch have been restored, and links from the Library Catalogue to eBook content in the Knovel platform are now resolving correctly. Please contact eServices if you continue to experience any further problems.

New resource: OSH-UPDATE

Access to the OSH-UPDATE service has been set-up in eSearch. Access is direct on-campus, and by university username and password from off-campus (using the Shibbolized eZproxy service). The resource is described as follows:

OSH-UPDATE offers more than 500,000 records in the fields of occupational health, safety, hygiene, road safety, water safety and environment trends, drawn from a range of authoritative database sources including the UK legislation database; the UK Health and Safety Executive HSELINE; and the UK Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and a number of other European and worldwide sources.

OSH-UPDATE provides full bibliographic citation and abstracts for all journal articles, conference reports and other materials in its index; and offers links to selected full-text services where these are available.

As only a single simultaneous user is permitted under the terms of LLR’s licence, the following note has also been added:

Please note: under the terms of LLR’s subscription to OSH-UPDATE only one person may access the resource at a time. To free up the service for the next visitor, always remember to Logoff at the end of your session. If you see the following error message, “You have reached your licences limit on the number of concurrent sessions”, please try again later.

For LLR, OSH-UPDATE serves as a replacement for the OSH-ROM service which will shortly cease to be available from Silverplatter-OVID. A further update will confirm when OSH-ROM has been withdrawn from eSearch.

Additional resources now using Shibboleth authentication

Off-campus access to the following resources, which required the customer to provide their university domain, username and password, has now been integrated with the Shibboleth service. Links in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly:

  • Bridgeman Education
  • Construction Building Abstracts
  • Key Note
  • Knovel
  • Linguistics Abstracts
  • New Left Review
  • Perdita Manuscripts: Women Writers, 1500-1700
  • Urbadoc
  • Verdict Research
  • WARC Market Research Abstracts

More detailed information, along with an illustrated walkthrough has been added to the relevant section of the eServices support wiki.

Networked CD-ROMs and eZproxy – brief service interruption

There will be a brief interruption in service for both the networked CD-ROMs and eZproxy (used for those resources which require domain, username and password for off-campus access) some time between 11am-12noon on Sunday 18 February, to allow necessary software patching. Testing will be carried out first thing on Monday to ensure that all services are working normally.
