New resource: Intute: Social Sciences, Statistics and Data

The Intute: Social Sciences, Statistics and Data service has been added to all of the Statistics sub-categories, and the Research Methods, sub-categories in eSearch. Access is unrestricted on-campus and off-campus, and – like other Intute services – this resource is remote-searchable and cross-searchable in eSearch. The resource is described as follows:

Free access to high quality statistics resources on the internet.

ICONDA – access restored

Access to the ICONDA (International Construction Database) service, which had been temporarily lost on the Silverplatter interface, has now been restored. The resource is again accessible through eSearch.

eSearch Category and Sub-Category amendment: education

The ‘Teacher Training, Education, Childhood and Youth Studies’ Category in eSearch has been renamed Education, Teacher Training, Childhood and Youth Studies. A new PC and Sports Education Sub-category has also been created, in which 12 eSearch resources have been listed.

CD-ROM content migration to eSearch – Digital Textiles, Spon’s price books and Trend Report 2007

Following the withdrawal of LLR’s networked CD-ROM service, several titles identified were identified for retention and migration to a new delivery platform.

The following titles are now available, as .pdf or PowerPoint files, through eSearch:

  • Digital Textiles
  • Spon’s Architects’ and Builders’ Price Book
  • Spon’s Civil Engineering and Highway Works Price Book
  • Spon’s External Works and Landscape Price Book
  • Trend Report 2007

Access to these titles is by University domain, username and password (although on-campus visitors who have already authenticated into other services may not be challenged again to login). Digital Textiles and Trend Report 2007 are accessible on-campus and off-campus. The Spon’s price book titles are only accessible from on-campus. Because of the way that LLR is managing this content, it is necessary to add ads\ (the standard university domain) before entering a university username (e.g. ads\NXXXXXX) to login successfully to these materials.

Access to alternative web based Croner materials (which replace several now-withdrawn Croner CD-ROM titles) should be available shortly. LLR is waiting on Wolters Kluwer to complete some additional configuration work before these titles can be activated. A further update on Croner content will be provided as soon as possible.

eSearch ‘Find a database’ search widget withdrawn from LLR web site home page

Following initial feedback on the new LLR web site, the site project group have decided to withdraw the eSearch ‘Find a database’ search widget from the LLR home page.

An ‘Information Direct’ button and explanatory text have been added in its place (see illustration below).

LLR web site Library Catalogue search widget

The Library Catalogue search widget on the LLR home page has been retained (see illustration above). However, please be aware that the link to ‘My Library Card’ which previously appeared under the Search and Clear buttons has been replaced with a ‘Full Catalogue Search’ link, which opens up the ‘Basic Search’ screen of the Library Catalogue in a new window.

The principal access route to eSearch in the LLR web site can now be found under the ‘Resources and Collections’ heading of the LLR web site (see illustration below – click on image for larger version).

In light of this change, LLR is reviewing the Library Search widget in NOW (the new VLE) to see whether it would be appropriate to ‘match’ the revised LLR web site search widget by withdrawing the ‘Find a database’ eSearch search option from there as well.

Education Image Gallery – Shibboleth authentication active in eSearch

Off-campus authentication to the Education Image Gallery has now been migrated to Shibboleth in eSearch. Athens based authentication to the service will be withdrawn by EDINA on 31 July 2008. Detailed information, and an illustrated walkthrough, is provided in the relevant section of the eServices Support Materials wiki.

IRep – remote and metasearching enabled in eSearch

Remote and metasearching of the IRep (the NTU Institutional Repository) has now been enabled in eSearch. As with the NTU Library Catalogue, there is no need to login to eSearch to carry out remote searches of the IRep. The Full View of IRep record in eSearch provides links both to the record within the IRep and direct to the object (such as the image, pdf, PowerPoint file) where such objects are available. Where IRep records include ‘thumbnail’ images, these are returned and displayed within eSearch.

Emerald – remote and metasearching suspended in eSearch

Ex Libris are working on a new search configuration for remote and metasearching of the Emerald full-text service in eSearch, following changes in the platform introduced this week. As with JSTOR, LLR will activate the new configuration as soon as it is made available. In the meantime, remote and metasearching of Emerald FullText has been temporarily suspended in eSearch.

JSTOR – remote and metasearching suspended in eSearch

Unanticipated changes in the JSTOR XML gateway in recent days have caused problems with remote and metasearching configurations in eSearch. Ex Libris expect to be able to release an updated search configuration shortly, which LLR will apply as soon as it is released. In the meantime, both individual remote and metasearching of JSTOR has been temporarily suspended in eSearch.

JSTOR have also reported late yesterday that the platform is experiencing intermittent problems with Athens authentication, which JSTOR expect to resolve ‘within the next 24 hours’.

Criminal Justice Abstracts: remote searching problem resolved

A problem which was preventing records returned by a remote search of Criminal Justice Abstracts in eSearch from displaying properly has now been identified and resolved.
