Artstor – new subscription now active

THE ARTSTOR DIGITAL Library, which provides access to high-quality images across a range of disciplines rights-cleared for use in education and research, is now available through a full active subscription via the Find Databases service.

The Artstor service was previously provided as one of the library’s temporary additional electronic resources. That temporary availability concluded on 30 June 2021, at which point the new subscription became active.

ACCESS TO THE Artstor digital image library is now available through the Find Databases service.

Students and staff can login to the resource using their university username and password and will then need to register an individual Artstor account.

The new resource is described as follows:

The Artstor Digital Library provides access to a huge collection of high-quality, cross-disciplinary images. These images have been rights-cleared for use in education and research – allowing them to be included in teaching materials, student assignments and other noncommercial educational and scholarly activities. Images can be scrutinised in detail using the built-in viewer; downloaded individually and in groups; and organised into personal collections for future reference. Amongst the large number of collections brought together in Artstor are materials from: The Art Institute of Chicago, Condé Nast, the Jon Schueler Estate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Yale Center for British Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Access to Artstor is currently available until 30 June 2021.

New resource: JSTOR – 24k DDA eBooks now discoverable in Library OneSearch

A total of 24,296 eBook titles accessible through the JSTOR platform, and made available as part of a DDA (Demand Driven Acquisition) package, are now discoverable in Library OneSearch. Access to the titles is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus.

Sample titles including the following:

JSTOR – Shibboleth maintenance – 20-25 August

The technical team at JSTOR advise that beginning today (20 August) they are carrying out some maintenance work on their Shibboleth infrastructure – work that may cause authentication delays for new off-campus visitors to the platform. They report:

Shibboleth users that are logging into JSTOR for the first time (e.g. new accounts) may experience between a 5-30 minute delay in being authenticated. We recommend that if users have this experience, they come back to JSTOR and login again after 30 minutes has past. At that point, they should gain access immediately.
Please note that this only impacts new users. Users that have already logged into JSTOR prior to today should not experience any delay.

It is expected that the work will be completed early next week (by 25 August). Direct on-campus access will not be affected by this work.

JSTOR – full text access problems continuing

The JSTOR technical team has identified the cause of the ongoing problem that which is continuing to cause some full-text requests to journal articles on the JSTOR platform to fail.

The team hope to have a resolution for the problem in place shortly, but at present, the issue is continuing to cause intermittent problems.

Title level requests continue to work normally. An A-Z list of current ejournal titles available through LLR’s subscription to JSTOR collections is available:

JSTOR – problems affecting some SFX full-text requests

The JSTOR technical team are working to resolve issues that are affecting incoming full-text requests from link resolvers (such as SFX [Find it @ NTU]) for some (but not all) JSTOR content. Some requests from SFX to articles in JSTOR journals may currently result in errors. JSTOR reports the service is:

currently experiencing some technical issues with inbound OpenURL linking. While these issues do not affect all articles, we do acknowledge the inconvenience here and are working hard to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. […] Unfortunately at this time we do not have an estimate of when this issue will be completely solved, but we appreciate your patience.

JSTOR – full Shibboleth integration

LLR has now secured full Shibboleth based authentication on the JSTOR platfrom (previously LLR was providing off-campus access to JSTOR through a Shibbolized eZproxy connection). This means that off-campus LLR customers can access the correct login screen directly in the JSTOR interface (and not only through an SFX connection to the service). A guide to using Shibboleth on JSTOR has been added to the eServices Support wiki.

JSTOR – off-campus access constraint

eServices is working with the JSTOR service to identify a problem affecting Shibboleth authentication from off-campus. Currently is not for a customer to select an NTU Shibboleth login link in the native interface of JSTOR. However, if an off-campus customer selects a link to JSTOR in eSearch, SFX or the LLR Library Catalogue, they will be able to log in to the service using their university username and password.

In short: LLR customers needing off-campus access to JSTOR must access the service through eSearch, SFX or the Library Catalogue in order to log in successfully.
