WGSN: move to Single Sign-on now live

WGSN - March - 2016

AUTHENTICATED ACCESS TO WGSN (the World Global Style Network) is now by university username and password.

On-campus and off-campus access URLs have been updated on the WGSN Find Databases listing.

The move to Single Sign On (SSO), advance notice of which was shared on 17 March, replaces the need for staff and students to register and maintain individual accounts, and to remember personally created WGSN credentials. SSO based accounts at WGSN will not expire, as long as the student’s or staff member’s NTU account remains active.

As part of the migration process, all existing personalised settings on WGSN have been moved over to the new Single Sign On environment. This means that no manual intervention is required to ensure account continuity.

WGSN access moves to Single Sign On

WGSN - March - 2016

FROM 29 MARCH 2023, authenticated access to WGSN (the World Global Style Network) will be by university username and password.

The move to Single Sign On (SSO) will replace the need for staff and students to register and maintain individual accounts, and to remember personally created WGSN credentials.

The migration to SSO for WGSN will take place at around 14:00 on 29 March 2023, at which point the access details on the Find Databases listing for WGSN will be updated. The move will not involve any downtime and, up until the point of switchover, NTU staff and students will be able to continue using their existing WGSN account credentials.

As part of the migration process, all existing personalised settings on WGSN will be moved over to the new Single Sign On environment. This means that no manual intervention will be required to ensure account continuity.

The move to SSO for WGSN will make for a far better user experience of the service, and resolve the problems caused by personal account expiry and forgotten password information.

Off-campus login issues affecting WGSN – Resolved

WGSN user interface

The recent off-campus log in issues to WGSN have now been resolved.

Both on and off-campus access options are available again when using the Find Databases page links.

WGSN apologise for any disruption this outage may have caused.

Off-campus login issues affecting WGSN

We are currently investigating reports of off-campus log in issues to WGSN when using the ‘Off-campus access’ option on the Find Databases WGSN page:

https://llr.ntu.ac.uk/dbaz/dbDetail.php?dbID=254

Off-campus login attempts currently result in the following error message.

You may not log into this account from this location error message.

The ‘On-campus access’ option is still available for users physically at the University campus.

WGSN: Find Databases entry updated

WGSN - March - 2016

THE ON-CAMPUS AND off-campus access URLs for WGSN (World Global Style Network) have been updated in the resource’s Find Databases listing, to align with the company’s latest ‘best practice’ guidance.

A new Registration Guide (May 2021) has also been made available through the Find Databases listing, which updates guidance on how to create a new WGSN account and how to reactivate an existing account.

The library is discussing with the WGSN technical team and with Digital Technologies the options for migrating authentication for the WGSN service over to the NTU Single Sign On service. Further updates will follow on this potential development as those discussions progress.

WGSN – changes to registration process

As of Wednesday 24 April any new users creating educational WGSN accounts will have to register using their NTU email address ending in either @ntu.ac.uk or @my.ntu.ac.uk.

Any other attempts to register with a non-NTU email domain such as gmail or hotmail will result in a failed registration attempt.

Students and staff that have previously registered with personal email accounts will still be able to access their existing accounts.

Off-campus registration to WGSN re-enabled

AS PART OF the rollout of the new hosted eZproxy service, the ability to register a new (and re-activate an inactive) WGSN account from off-campus has been re-enabled – as long as the student authenticates via the Library OneSearch link. Library colleagues will no longer need to mediate the creation or reactivation of WGSN accounts for students who are off-campus.

An updated guide to creating a WGSN account, and guide to managing an existing WGSN account, have also been made available through the listing of the resource in the Find Databases service of Library OneSearch.

Off-campus access using eZproxy and updates to third-party web sites

The eZproxy authentication framework enables the library to provide secure off-campus access to subscription-based third-party resources for providers who are unable to support the Shibboleth protocol. We have encountered an issue over the last few months that has led to the loss of off-campus to a number of such resources. This is the result of those third-party web platforms moving their entire site across from ‘http:’ to the more secure ‘https:’ protocol. This causes a key component of the exchange between the university’s eZproxy server and the third party site to fail.

The solution to this issue is an upgrade to the eZproxy server, an enhancement that colleagues in IS are preparing to deploy to the production environment once testing has successfully completed.

The resources currently affected by this problem are:

  • Elgar Online

A further update will follow once the upgrade to eZproxy has been deployed and access to these services is confirmed as restored.

WGSN – new platform launched; off-campus registration issues

The WGSN service has launched a new and upgraded platform. Access links in Library OneSearch have been updated accordingly. Access to the service for staff and students remains direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. Additional individual account registration is still required in order to make use of WGSN services.

The Creating a user account for WGSN guide available through Library OneSearch has been updated to take account of the WGSN site changes.

Currently, due to the site upgrade, it is not possible to register for a new WGSN account from an off-campus location. A note alerting staff and students to this access constraint has been added to the WGSN record in LOS.

Previously registered users can continue to access the site from off-campus; and once an account has been registered from an on-site location, off-campus access is available. The library is in discussion with the WGSN technical team to see if off-site registration for WGSN can be restored.

WGSN - March - 2016

UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 2016: Off-campus registration for the WGSN service is possible once again. An updated how-to-register guide has been made available through Library OneSearch

WGSN – service unavailable

The WGSN service is currently experiencing technical difficulties which have rendered the service inaccessible through Library OneSearch. WGSN’s technical staff are working to resolve the problem, and a further update will follow once normal service has been restored. A note has been added to the description field of WGSN in LOS indicating the interruption in access.
