Web of Science – database listing changes

Following the redesign and reorganisation of the Web of Science service, database details in Library OneSearch have been updated to reflect the consolidation of the datasets that WoS provides.

Access to ‘Web of Science’ remains direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus.

New resource: ProQuest Dissertations & Theses – UK and Ireland

Access to the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses – UK and Ireland collection has been enabled in Library OneSearch. Access to the collection, which can be cross-searched alongside other databases on the search.proquest.com platform, is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses — UK & ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland provides details of doctoral theses awarded by institutions in the United Kingdom and Ireland dating back to 1716. Along with detailed descriptive records, including a large proportion of abstracts, the service provides PDF previews of selected theses, where these are available. The collection covers PhD theses in the following subject areas: business, health and medicine, history, literature and language, science and technology, social sciences, and the arts.

Previously, theses records were made available through the Index to Theses service (provided by Expert Information), prior to the ProQuest’s acquisition of the collection. As access to the Index to Theses platform continues to be made available (for the time being, at least), the entry for Index to Theses has been retained in Library OneSearch as an alternate entry point to the dataset.

Greenleaf Sustainable Organization Library (SOL) – access arrangements changed

Access arrangements for the eBooks in the Greenleaf Sustainable Organization Library (SOL) (a collection originally enabled in Library OneSearch in July 2013) have been amended.

The SOL is now made available through its own bespoke interface within the ingentaconnect platform. All links in LOS records for SOL eBooks have been amended to point to this new interface.

As this bespoke platform is not yet Shibboleth compliant (in the way that the main ingentaconnect interface is) off-campus access to titles in this collection has been enabled through eZproxy. This means that on-campus access remains direct; while off-campus access (through Library OneSearch) is by university username and password.

IEEE Xplore platform – Shibboleth login issues

With colleagues in Information Systems, LLR is investigating an issue which is preventing off-campus login to the IEEE Xplore platform. Customers selecting ‘Nottingham Trent University’ from the available list of institutions to log in from are resolved to a Shibboleth error page rather than to the NTU Single Sign-On page.

A further update will follow once the issue has been successfully resolved.

ProQuest: downtime for upgrades – Sunday 16 February 2014

ProQuest will be carrying out a scheduled upgrade of its online services on Sunday 16 February 2014, with an eight-hour ‘at risk’ period starting (for UK customers) at 03:00, and finishing at 11:00.

During that period access to all databases on the search.proquest.com platform may be unavailable at times or throughout. The affected databases are:

  • Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA)
  • ARTbibliographies Modern (ABM)
  • Australian Education Index
  • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
  • British Education Index
  • British Humanities Index (BHI)
  • British Periodicals (1681 – 1937)
  • Design and Applied Arts Index (DAAI)
  • Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive
  • ERIC
  • International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS)
  • MLA International Bibliography
  • Periodicals Archive Online
  • PILOTS: Published International Literature On Traumatic Stress
  • ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland
  • Social Services Abstracts
  • Sociological Abstracts
  • The Vogue Archive

RefWorks will also be affected during the same upgrade period. ProQuest indicate:

During this time period RefWorks users can expect sporadic availability, including short periods of complete downtime. We anticipate that access issues and possible functionality problems will last anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes. If you experience issues with RefWorks during this maintenance window we recommend that you close your browser session, and return to RefWorks at a later time.

WGSN – access problems resolved

The access problems affecting the WGSN service reported yesterday now appear to have been resolved, and the service is working normally once again. Details in Library OneSearch have been updated accordingly.

WGSN – service unavailable

The WGSN service is currently experiencing technical difficulties which have rendered the service inaccessible through Library OneSearch. WGSN’s technical staff are working to resolve the problem, and a further update will follow once normal service has been restored. A note has been added to the description field of WGSN in LOS indicating the interruption in access.

Web of Science – technical issues affecting new platform resolved

Thomson Reuters report that the technical and performance issues affecting the new Web of Science interface, following the upgrade of the service at the weekend, have now been resolved.

Web of Science – new interface launched

The latest upgrade to the Web of Science interface (v.5.13) has just been launched and is now live. Thomson Reuters describe the update as follows:

The new Web of Science delivers a user-centric redesign to provide a simplified, intuitive search with clearer results through a single interface. No data or search index changes have been made. These enhancements make it:

  • easier to start a search
  • easier to review results, and
  • easier to discover related research with linked data

Enhancements that you will notice include:

  • improved page layout and readability
  • clear identification of the database searched
  • simplified navigation and grouping of functional controls
  • expanded search fields available with one click, and
  • easier links to full text

Web of Science databases are listed in Library OneSearch under the following separate entries:

  • Arts and Humanities Citation Index
  • BIOSIS Previews
  • Journal Citation Reports
  • Science Citation Index
  • Social Science Citation Index
  • Web of Knowledge
  • Web of Science (with Conference Proceedings)

Thomson Reuters have published a range of video tutorials explaining how different features in the new interface work – including a Web of Science Quick Tour.

Following the upgrade over the weekend of 11-12 January 2014 a number of service and performance errors have been reported, and some users may encounter error messages when using the new interface. Thomson Reuters are working to resolve these teething problems as soon as possible.

Box of Broadcasts (BoB) – new interface now live

Following the period of upgrade downtime in December, the new interface for the Box of Broadcasts (BoB) off-air recording service is now fully live; and account logins for staff and students are confirmed as working normally.

Video tutorials, providing guidance on how to use the upgraded interface, will be provided by BoB in the near future. An upgraded PDF user guide for Nottingham Trent University staff and students will be made available shortly.
