HeinOnline: technical difficulties

The HeinOnline legal database service is experiencing technical difficulties at present, which its engineers are working to correct. HeinOnline report that:

During the interim, you may experience slow load times and/or delays in HeinOnline. You may also experience difficulty searching, resulting in search errors. Continue to check back and rerun your search query.

eServices will update, once HeinOnline has confirmed the resolution of these problems.

Clean-up and archive of legacy LLR web pages

Over the remainder of this week, eServices will be working to withdraw from LLR’s web server ‘Shelob’ old-style LLR web pages which have long since been withdrawn from service. These pages all predate the current LLR web site and are not linked to from anywhere within the LLR site, ALEPH, eSearch, SFX, the IRep or the VLE. The only (unintentional) access route to these withdrawn pages has been through the Google search box embedded in top-right of the university’s web page template. These defunct pages will shortly disappear from the results lists of Google searches, but in the meantime clicking on the entry for a withdrawn page in a Google results lists will return a ‘page not found’ response.

eServices is retaining an off-line archive of all of the withdrawn pages, should any LLR colleagues need to refer back to their contents in future.

This process will have no effect whatsoever on the live LLR web site.

Resource platform change: IBSS (International Bibliography of the Social Sciences)

LLR’s access to IBSS is now provided through the EBSCOhost platform, and eSearch linkages have been updated accordingly. Access to the resource is direct on-campus and by Athens username and password off-campus. IBSS can be remote searched and metasearched in eSearch.

Bentham Open Access journals

Access to 166 free-to-view ejournals from the Bentham Open Access collection has been enabled in SFX. Titles in the collection cover the disciplines of science, technology and medicine. Individual catalogue records for these titles will be added the Library Catalogue during the next round of e-record loading.

New resource: LISTA (Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts)

The LISTA database service is provided as a no-extra-cost service through the EBSCOhost platform, and access to the resource has now been set up in eSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by Athens username and password off-campus. LISTA can be remote searched and metasearched in eSearch. The resource is described as follows:

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) indexes more than 600 periodicals, plus books, research reports and proceedings. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid-1960s.

New resource: Violence and Abuse Abstracts

Access to Violence and Abuse Abstracts on the EBSCOhost platform has been made available through eSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by Athens username and password off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

Violence and Abuse Abstracts includes bibliographic records covering essential areas related to violence and abuse, including family violence, sexual assault, emotional abuse, and other areas of key relevance to the discipline.

New resource: Abstracts in Social Gerontology

Access to Abstracts in Social Gerontology on the EBSCOhost platform has been made available through eSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by Athens username and password off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

Abstracts in Social Gerontology includes bibliographic records covering essential areas related to social gerontology, including the psychology of aging, elder abuse, society and the elderly, and other areas of key relevance to the discipline.

Withdrawn resources: networked CD-ROMs

As a result of the recent review of networked CD-ROM provision, LLR has decided to withdraw all networked CD-ROMs from service and provide alternative access to selected CD-ROM materials which are still required for learning, teaching and research purposes. These alternative access routes will be available prior to the start of the autumn term. However, links to all CD-ROM titles have now been withdrawn from eSearch as the contracts with LLR’s external suppliers which support the CD-ROM network have now lapsed. More detailed information on the small number of CD-ROM titles that will, in future, be delivered in an alternative electronic format will be provided shortly.

Withdrawn resource: UKOP

The listing for UKOP (the UK Official Publications database) which was previously suspended in eSearch has now been withdrawn completely. Future subscription options for this service will be under review shortly.

Census Registration Service – Shibboleth authentication active

The Census Registration Service manages the registration process controlling authorised access to a number of resources and collections including:

* Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR) (for the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs), 1991-2001).
* Census Dissemination Unit (CDU) (at Mimas for the aggregate outputs and related geographical datasets, 1971-2001).
* Centre for Interaction Data Estimation and Research (CIDER) (for origin-destination statistics, 1981-2001).
* UKBORDERS (at Edina for digitised boundary datasets, 1971-2001).

Registration to make use of these services will also provide access to Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) and ESDS International through the UK Data Archive.

Authentication for on-campus and off-campus customers wanting to register to use these services is now available through the Shibboleth framework, and links to the relevant databases have been updated in eSearch.

It is possible for customers with an existing Athens-based registration to transfer their registration to the new Shibboleth authentication system. Details of this process and a walkthrough guide are provided in the relevant section of the eServices Support wiki.

EDINA services – Athens authentication withdrawn, 1 August 2008

As previously advised, effective from today (1 August 2008) EDINA has withdrawn the option to authenticate using an Athens username and password from the following services:

  • Digimap (on-campus and off-campus)
  • Education Image Gallery
  • Film and Sound Online
  • Jorum
  • Land, Life and Leisure
  • UK Borders
  • Zetoc

Access to all of these services for off-campus visitors is now available exclusively by university username and password using the Shibboleth framework.

Zetoc – Shibboleth authentication now active

Off-campus access to the Zetoc abstracting service has been moved from Athens to Shibboleth authentication in both eSearch and SFX. Athens based access to the service will be withdrawn by EDINA on 31 July 2008. More detailed information, along with an illustrated walkthrough has been added to the relevant section of the eServices support wiki.
