Science Direct – Shibboleth authenticated access enabled

Off-campus access to all of LLR’s subscribed materials on the Science Direct platform is now by university username and password (using Shibboleth). Links and prompts in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly. A guide to using Shibboleth authentication for Science Direct has been added to the eServices Support wiki. The remote and MetaSearch configuration for Science Direct in eSearch has also recently been updated.

Shibboleth – new resource migrations

Following an intensive period of configuration work, Shibboleth authentication has been enabled for a large number of additional resources. Links and prompts in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly. A detailed guide to using Shibboleth on each of the affected resources has been added to the eServices support wiki.

The resources now requiring a university username and password (Shibboleth) for off-campus access are as follows:

  • CSA Illumina
    • ANTE: Abstracts in New Technologies and Engineering
    • ARTBiliographies Modern
    • ASSIA: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts
    • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
    • BHI: British Humanities Index
    • Criminal Justice Abstracts
    • DAAI: Design and Applied Arts Index
    • ERIC
    • Polymer Library
    • Social Services Abstracts
    • Sociological Abstracts
  • EBSCOhost
    • Abstracts in Social Gerontology
    • Academic Search Elite
    • Business Source Premier
    • EconLit
    • International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
    • Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts
    • PsycARTICLES
    • PsycINFO
    • Regional Business News
    • Research Starters – Business
    • Research Starters – Education
    • SPORTDiscus
    • Textile Technology Index
    • Violence & Abuse Abstracts
  • LexisNexis Butterworths (On-campus and off-campus)
  • NexisUK
  • Westlaw

For all of these resources, Athens authenticated access will continue to be available for the time being, in parallel with Shibboleth-based authentication – although LLR will be promoting Shibboleth access (“Using your university username and password”) in preference to Athens.

New resources: House of Commons Parliamentary Papers, 18th and 20th century collections

Two separate new collections have been added to eSearch – House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP) – 18th Century and House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP) – 20th Century. These join LLR’s existing subscription to House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP) – 19th Century. All three collections are delivered through a single unified Proquest interface.

Each collection offers “page facsimiles, searchable full text and a detailed subject catalogue of House of Commons sessional papers and supplementary material” for the period in question.

Access to all three collections is direct on-campus, and by university username and password from off-campus (using the Shibboleth framework). A guide to using Shibboleth to access these collections has been added to the eServices support wiki.

Shibboleth single-sign on extended to NOW

NTU’s online learning environment NOW is now making use of Shibboleth for staff and student login. This means that if a member of the university logs in to NOW and then (using the eSearch search widget) accesses a database in eSearch which requires Shibboleth authentication for access, they should be automatically authenticated without needing to log in for a second time.

This is an important development on the path towards the goal of a ‘single sign-on’ environment for NTU staff and students.

Shibboleth Single Sign-on – improved logon

As colleagues will be aware, access to online resources that are Shibboleth enabled is by university username and password. An enhancement to the login service that has now gone live means that if a customer inadvertently adds an ADS\ prefix to their username, the system will automatically strip this out and allow the customer’s login to proceed normally without generating an error (e.g. ADS\N0101010 will be converted to N0101010). The same process works if the customer incorrectly enters the unwanted ADS with a forward slash as well (e.g. ADS/N0101010 will be converted to N0101010).

This enhancement should reduce the instance of rejected logins, whilst operating as a discrete behind-the-scenes process. The instruction to customers remains unchanged: “Login using your university username and password”.

New resource: NewsFilm Online

Access to the NewsFilm Online service has been enabled in eSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by university username and password (using Shibboleth) from off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

NewsFilm Online comprises a selection of news stories and programme scripts from the ITN/Reuters archives, with some 3,000 hours of footage and around 60,000 stories. The archive is searchable by keywords, and can also be browsed by broad subject categories or decade, going back to the 1920s.

Video content may be streamed (or downloaded) in Windows Media Player or QuickTime formats.

The ‘My Favourites’ facility allows you to set up and organise folders to store video and other NewsFilm records.

The following Terms of Use guidance has also been added:

Under the terms of the license, NTU staff and students may “include parts of the Licensed Work in printed or electronic form in assignments and portfolios, theses and in dissertations” provided that “each item shall carry appropriate acknowledgement of the source, listing title and copyright owner.”

A guide to Shibboleth authentication to the NewsFilm Online service has been added to the eServices support materials wiki.

British Library Archival Sound Recordings – Shibboleth authentication now active

Access to the audio content of the British Library Archival Sound Recordings service is now by university username and password (using Shibboleth) on-campus and off-campus. Athens authentication to the service is no longer available. Links and prompts in eSearch have been updated accordingly. A guide to using Shibboleth authentication for this service has been added to the eServices support wiki.

Credo Reference – Athens login URL updated

The off-campus direct Athens login URL for the Credo Reference service has been updated in eSearch (for all five separate Credo listings: Complete; Biography; Dictionaries; Encyclopedias; Quotations) and now points to: http://www.credoreference.com/authathens.do.

From within the Credo Reference interface, off-campus customers can access the login screen through the Login with your Athens username and password link under the ‘Book citation’ screen of any selected title (see illustration below).

Please be aware that, although Credo Reference offers a ‘Log in via your institution’ link (which connects to a Shibboleth login process), LLR is not yet supporting Shibboleth authentication for this service. eServices is working with Credo’s technical team on a number of issues which need to be resolved before LLR can migrate to Shibboleth-based authentication.

Shibboleth login screen – amended layout

Following feedback from the ALT on the look-and-feel of the Shibboleth login screen, IS agreed to introduce a number of enhancements and refinements to the page. These changes went live last week. Overall, the changes streamline and simplify the look of the page. Specific changes include:

  • Changing the description ‘NTU Single Signon’ to NTU Single Sign-on
  • Removing the repeated and overlapping references to ‘logging in’
  • Increasing the default text size on the page
  • Replacing the ‘end of your session’ prompt with a simpler and more appropriate phrase

Further feedback on the design and useability of this page is welcomed.

HeinOnline – off-campus authentication now via Shibboleth

Off-campus authentication to the HeinOnline database is now by university username and password (using Shibboleth). Links and prompts in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly. Implementation decisions by HeinOnline mean that Athens based authentication to HeinOnline is no longer available to Nottingham Trent University staff and students, despite the existence of an Athens login option in the HeinOnline interface. Off-campus customers accessing HeinOnline through eSearch will be directed to the appropriate Shibboleth login screen.

More detailed information about the switchover, including a walkthrough to Shibboleth authentication in the native interface of HeinOnline has been added to the eServices Support wiki.

BUFVC (British Universities Film and Video Council) services – Shibboleth authentication now active

On-campus and off-campus access to the TRILT (Television and Radio Index for Learning and Teaching) and TVTiP TV Times Project 1955-1985 services from the BUFVC has been migrated from Athens to Shibboleth, and links in eSearch have been updated accordingly. Athens authentication to BUFVC services is no longer available. More detailed information, along with an illustrated walkthrough has been added to the relevant section of the eServices support wiki.

Census Registration Service – Shibboleth authentication active

The Census Registration Service manages the registration process controlling authorised access to a number of resources and collections including:

* Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR) (for the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs), 1991-2001).
* Census Dissemination Unit (CDU) (at Mimas for the aggregate outputs and related geographical datasets, 1971-2001).
* Centre for Interaction Data Estimation and Research (CIDER) (for origin-destination statistics, 1981-2001).
* UKBORDERS (at Edina for digitised boundary datasets, 1971-2001).

Registration to make use of these services will also provide access to Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) and ESDS International through the UK Data Archive.

Authentication for on-campus and off-campus customers wanting to register to use these services is now available through the Shibboleth framework, and links to the relevant databases have been updated in eSearch.

It is possible for customers with an existing Athens-based registration to transfer their registration to the new Shibboleth authentication system. Details of this process and a walkthrough guide are provided in the relevant section of the eServices Support wiki.
