Talis RLMS changes: integrations updated

FOLLOWING TALIS’ DEPLOYMENT of upgrades to the Resource List Management System this morning, integrations with connected library services have been updated.

Talis Aspire connections have been reviewed (and revisions deployed as required) for the following applications:

  • NOW: The RLMS widget, which displays information about a module’s matching resource list, the number of items on that list, and the date of most recent update (together with a deep-link to the resource list in Aspire) has been re-enabled;
  • Library OneSearch and Library OneSearch Pro: The ability to ‘Send to my RLMS bookmarks’ from an LOS search result is active;
  • SFX: The function that allow academics to ‘Save this resource to your Resource List Management System (RLMS) bookmarks’ is running normally;
  • Copythat: Real-time and scheduled confirmation of matches between requested items and the current resource lists are both running as usual;
  • Relic: The ability to check for the presence of a LCN, DOI, ISSN or ISBN on a current resource list has been reinstated;

Upgrades to the resource list widget in the Engage VLE platform used to support Distance Learning provision are under review by the Wiley technical team. In the meantime, deep-links to the matching Aspire resource lists are being added to all DL modules to provide ongoing access pending completion of the technical works.

UPDATED, 19 NOVEMBER: Wiley have been able to update the resource lists widgets on the Engage Distance Learning platform, which are working normally once more.

TALIS HAVE THIS morning deployed some configuration changes to our RLMS tenancy that will improve both the security and resilience of the service.

These changes will not affect the current operation of list creation, editing, publishing or review, or the collection of bookmarks or the management of profiles.

However, these changes do require that the integrations that the library has developed between the RLMS and other services (such as NOW, LOS and SFX) need to be updated to align with the new settings.

There may be some temporary disruption to these integrations (such as RLMS widgets and library apps such as Relic) while this work is completed – the first such upgrades have already been deployed and are live.

A further update will follow once all existing integrations are confirmed as in sync with the new protocols.

THE BLACK FREEDOM Struggle in the United States digital document archive has been made discoverable in the Find Databases service of Library OneSearch.

Made freely available online by publishers ProQuest, access to the resource is not subject to any requirement to log in.

The resource is described as follows:

Black Freedom Struggle in the United States is an archival service containing a selection of approximately 1,600 documents, with others being added, focusing on African American efforts to secure civil and human rights – from slavery to the present, and is organised into six main collections:

  • Slavery and the Abolitionist Movement (1790-1860)
  • The Civil War and the Reconstruction Era (1861-1877)
  • Jim Crow Era from 1878 to the Great Depression (1878-1932)
  • The New Deal and World War II (1933-1945)
  • The Civil Rights and Black Power Movements (1946-1975)
  • The Contemporary Era (1976-2000)

This resource has been made freely available by ProQuest. As an independently managed resource, Black Freedom Struggle in the United States cannot be searched in parallel with other databases accessed through the main ProQuest search platform.

Essential textbook titles now available in online format

A NEW COLLECTION of electronic textbooks accessible through the Kortext platform is now discoverable through Library OneSearch and Library OneSearch Pro.

The collection brings together textbook publications produced by a range of different publishers, including titles that have been identified as Core resources on resource lists.

Until now, it has not been possible for the library to provide access to electronic versions of these key resources.

Authenticated access to the full-text of all 53 titles in the collection is by university username and password.

A NEW COLLECTION of eBooks from Oxford University Press’ Law Trove platform is now accessible through Library OneSearch and Library OneSearch Pro.

Access to all of the 202 subscribed titles in the collection is by university username and password.

Sage Catalyst eTextbook pilot launched

LLR HAS LAUNCHED an initial one-year pilot of SAGE Catalyst: a teaching and learning engagement software tool powered by Talis Elevate, which contains a ‘fully loaded collection of recent and premium social science electronic textbooks from SAGE.’

Agreeing to this pilot has enabled LLR to make available for the first time, online versions of over 70 core Resource List titles, that were previously only available in print.

Sage Catalyst contains the latest editions of over 500 premium, cross-disciplinary textbooks from across the social sciences, in subjects such as:

  • Business & Management (70+ titles)
  • Education (90+ titles)
  • Research methods (60+ titles)
  • Nursing (40+ titles)
  • Psychology (30+ titles)
  • Counselling & Psychotherapy (40+ titles)
  • Social work (30+ titles)
  • Media & Communication (30+ titles)
  • Sociology (30+ titles)
  • Criminology (20+ titles)
  • Politics (20+ titles)

Access to all electronic textbooks in the collection are available, in unlimited simultanteous use, to all NTU students and staff members. Content is made available through the Talis Elevate platform and authentication is by university username and password.

Talis Elevate is a new teaching and learning environment that enables student and faculty collaboration ‘within’ the textbook content. Talis Elevate can be integrated in to the VLE to provide students with their required reading in a form that is easily accessible, encourages collaboration and offers advanced analytics on student engagement to academics.

The result is a more active learning experience for students and stronger teaching support for the lecturer.

SAGE Catalyst further enables the instructor to add open educational resources, as well as other licensed institutional content so the package can be enhanced by the instructor, with no content modifications required.

Records for all titles in the subject areas listed above have also been added to Library OneSearch. Examples include:

THE CLINICALSKILLS SITE is now accessible through a new entry in the library’s Find Databases service.

Access to ClinicalSkills is by university username and password, and a one-time short registration process.

The resource is described as follows:

ClinicalSkills.net provides online training and the latest up-to-date best practice guidance across the full range of clinical skills and patient care. The platform includes procedures for those working in primary care, healthcare, in caring roles and for those working with adults and with children. Working through the site, and completing a series of tests and assessments, it’s possible to track your personal performance, add reflective accounts about your learning experience and build your CPD record within ClinicalSkills.

New resource: International Index to Black Periodicals

THE INTERNATIONAL INDEX to Black Periodicals, a full-text database from Chadwyck-Healey, is now accessible through a new entry in the library’s Find Databases service.

Access to the resource is by university username and password.

The resource is described as follows:

The International Index to Black Periodicals draws together content from more than 150 international scholarly and popular periodicals in Black studies. Subjects and disciplines including art, cultural criticism, economics, education, health, history, language and literature, law, philosophy, politics, religion, and sociology. Wherever possible, the full-text of all materials in the index is provided directly within the IIBP site, either in PDF or HTML format.

The subscription costs for the resource are being met from a university grant supporting a research project, with access also being made available to staff and students more widely for the duration of the subscription.

New resource: John Wiley eBook collection

MORE THAN 22 THOUSAND titles from the John Wiley eBook collection are now discoverable in Library OneSearch.

The titles are made available through a Usage Based Collection Management (UBCM) model, are will be accessible until the end of the UCBM cycle in June 2021. At that point, the library will be select titles to be purchased outright, following an analysis of the usage data across the whole period of access.
