Following a detailed review by the Research Support and Learning and Teaching teams, a number of changes have been made to the list of resources made available through the Find Databases service of Library OneSearch (which will also be reflected, later today, in searches in the ‘All’ search tab of LOS). Digital National Security Archive (DNSA) migration to the ProQuest platform

DNSA - ProQuest - 2015

Access to the Digital National Security Archive (DNSA) has been migrated from the legacy Chadwyck-Healey platform to the current main ProQuest platform in Library OneSearch. All links in LOS have been updated, and access is now direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus.

The database can now be searched separately or alongside other databases on the search.proquest.com platform. The DNSA collection can also be selected for remote searching (metasearching) in Library OneSearch (when logged in) and individual catalogue records for materials in the DNSA will be made available in the ‘All’ index of Library OneSearch shortly.

The library’s subscription to DNSA now includes a larger number of sub-collections, namely:

  • Chile and the United States: U.S. Policy toward Democracy, Dictatorship, and Human Rights, 1970–1990
  • CIA Family Jewels Indexed
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis: 50th Anniversary Update

ProQuest maintenance period – Sunday 1 March 2015

A maintenance upgrade to the main ProQuest infrastructure is scheduled for Sunday 1 March 2015 – starting at 03:00 UK time and lasting until 08:00. During this time, the following services will be unavailable:

  • Chadwyck-Healey databases (such as Literature Online)
  • LibraryThing for Libraries (which supports the IRep NTU authors showcase)
  • ProQuest platform (search.proquest.com) (all 24 databases, including the British Humanities Index, PsycArticles, The Vogue Archive, etc.,)
  • ProQuest Syndetic Solutions (which supports the book cover display and the ‘Learn more about this book’ feature in Library OneSearch)
  • RefWorks (all RefWorks services)

New resource: ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland

Access to the new ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland service has been enabled in Library OneSearch. The new service replaces the now-withdrawn Index to Theses service. Access to the new resource is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. ProQuest Dissertations & Theses: UK & Ireland is described as follows:

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses: UK & Ireland provides details of doctoral theses awarded by institutions in the United Kingdom and Ireland dating back to 1716. Along with detailed descriptive records, including a large proportion of abstracts, the service provides PDF previews of selected theses, where these are available. The collection covers PhD theses in the following subject areas: business, health and medicine, history, literature and language, science and technology, social sciences, and the arts.

As part of the search.proquest.com platfrom, the new service can be search independently or alongside one or more of the 23 other databases provided through the ProQuest site. The new resource has been has given the same category assignments as the previous Index to Theses service, namely:

A full-text archive of magazines covering the fields of art and architecture, dating from the late-nineteenth century to the twenty-first. Subjects covered include fine art, decorative arts, architecture, interior design, industrial design, and photography. The magazines are scanned from cover-to-cover and presented as full-colour, full-page images. All text elements are fully searchable.

New resource: Trench Journals and Unit Magazines of the First World War

Access to the Trench Journals and Unit Magazines of the First World War collection (1914-1919) has been enabled in Library OneSearch. Provided through the ProQuest platform, access to the resource is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

An archive containing an extensive collection of rare magazines by and for servicemen and women of all nations during the First World War. Over 1500 periodicals written and illustrated by serving members of the armed forces and associated welfare organisations (sourced from leading archives around the world including those of the Imperial War Museums and The British Library) published between 1914 and the end of 1919 are included. Magazines have been scanned cover-to-cover, in full colour or greyscale. The full-text of these publications is fully searchable.

PsycTESTS now available through the ProQuest platform

Further to the platform changes affecting the PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO services announced at the end of last month access to the PsycTESTS service is now available through the ProQuest platform, and is no longer provided through EBSCOhost. Access is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. Access information in the Library OneSearch ‘Find Databases’ service has been updated accordingly.

New resource: ProQuest Central

Access to the new ProQuest Central ‘meta-collection’ has been enabled in Library OneSearch. Access to the resource is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus.

The resource is described as follows:

ProQuest Central is a multidisciplinary database providing abstract information from more than 11,000 titles (8,000 of which are available in full-text). Amongst the 160 subject areas covered by the collection are business and economics, health and medical, news and world affairs, technology and social sciences. ProQuest Central can be searched in its entirety, as a single collection, or searches can be restricted to one or more of its specialist component collections.

Remote searching (metasearching) across the ProQuest Central collection has been enabled through Library OneSearch. Titles available in full-text within the ProQuest Central service have been enabled in SFX.

PsycINFO now available through the ProQuest platform

The PsycINFO database previously accessed through the EBSCOhost platform is now available through the ProQuest interface. Links and all related metadata have been updated in Library OneSearch, including the transfer of the previous category/subjects assignments. Access remains direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. Remote searching (metasearching) of the PsycINFO service has also been enabled in LOS.

PsycInfo - ProQuest

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) available on EBSCOhost

The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) is now accessible to library customers on two separate platforms. In addition to the existing access on the ProQuest platform, the ERIC is now also available through the EBSCOhost service. A parallel listing for the EBSCOhost version of ERIC has been enabled in Library OneSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) database is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to provide extensive access to educational-related literature. ERIC provides ready access to education literature to augment American education by increasing and facilitating the use of educational research and information to improve practice in learning, teaching, educational decision-making, and research. ERIC provides coverage of journal articles, conferences, meetings, government documents, theses, dissertations, reports, audiovisual media, bibliographies, directories, books and monographs.

British Education Index now accessible through the EBSCOhost platform

The British Education Index (BEI) which was previously accessed through the ProQuest platform is now available through the EBSCOhost service. All links and metadata, including category/subject assignments, have been updated in Library OneSearch to reflect this change. Access to BEI is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus.
