LexisLibrary and Nexis: maintenance downtime Saturday 16 March 2013

Scheduled maintenance work on the Lexis and Nexis platforms on Saturday 16 March 2013 will result in intermittent access and/or service interruption for most of the day. The company has published different ‘at risk’ periods in different communications, the longest of which is 04:00 to 17:00 GMT.

For LLR customers, the affected services are:

  • LexisLibrary
  • LexisPSL
  • Nexis UK

Lexis Library – RefWorks direct export

The ability to export references directly to RefWorks has been enabled in Lexis Library. To export references in this way, choose the required references and select the Export Bibliographic References option on the right-hand side of a results screen (see illustration below)

.

In the pop-up window which launches click on the Export option (see illustration below).

Following service calls from LLR (and other libraries) the Lexis technical team are investigating refinements to the way that reference fields are mapped between Lexis Library and RefWorks. An update on the reference mapping rules is expected shortly.

Lexis databases – Shibboleth error resolved

The problem preventing Shibboleth based access to the Nexis UK and Lexis Library services was resolved at the end of last week, following extensive and detailed investigations by both colleagues in IS (responsible for the management of the Shibboleth infrastructure) and within Lexis’ technical team. As soon as the issue was confirmed as resolved, all listings in eSearch were updated accordingly.

Lexis databases – Shibboleth error

Due to a technical problem affecting the Lexis Shibboleth service, access to the Nexis UK and Lexis Library services is currently unavailable. Attempts to login to either service in eSearch results in the following error.

Your attempt to sign in to the LexisNexis® services via Federated Access has failed. If you have forgotten your institution ID or password, please contact your institution. If you have entered a valid institution ID and password, please contact Customer Service on +44 845 370 1234. Please make a note of the following error number for the Customer Service representative: 17290A1616.

Full details of the problem have been passed to Lexis’s technical team and to Shibboleth colleagues in IS.

A further update will follow once access has been reinstated.

LexisLibrary and Nexis UK – access available once again

Lexis have confirmed that the problems preventing Shibboleth authentication on the Lexis Library and Nexis services have now been resolved.

Access to those services is now working normally again – and information in eSearch has been updated accordingly.

If you encounter any further difficulties accessing either service, please send full details to the eServices team (including any on-screen error messages).

LexisLibrary and Nexis UK – access unavailable

Due to technical problems affecting the Lexis Shibboleth service, it is currently not possible to login to either the LexisLibrary or Nexis UK service. Requests to login resolve to the following error message:

Your attempt to sign in to the LexisNexis® services via Federated Access has failed.

Lexis’s technical team is working to resolve the issue, and a further update will follow once access has been restored. Service icons, and customer notices, indicating the existence of this problem have been added to eSearch.

Science Direct – SFX issue resolved

The problem preventing links from Science Direct to SFX (Find it @ NTU) from resolving correctly reported on 26 January has now been corrected by Elsevier. Connections from Science Direct to SFX are now working normally.

LexisNexis Butterworths – service changes name to Lexis Library

The LexisNexis Butterworth service has been renamed as ‘Lexis Library’. This rebranding is now visible in the native interface of the service, but to avoid customer confusion at this point in the academic year, it has been agreed not to change the name of the resource in eSearch or SFX until the summer. Until then, eSearch and SFX will continue to refer to ‘LexisNexis Butterworths’.

Shibboleth – new resource migrations

Following an intensive period of configuration work, Shibboleth authentication has been enabled for a large number of additional resources. Links and prompts in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly. A detailed guide to using Shibboleth on each of the affected resources has been added to the eServices support wiki.

The resources now requiring a university username and password (Shibboleth) for off-campus access are as follows:

  • CSA Illumina
    • ANTE: Abstracts in New Technologies and Engineering
    • ARTBiliographies Modern
    • ASSIA: Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts
    • Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
    • BHI: British Humanities Index
    • Criminal Justice Abstracts
    • DAAI: Design and Applied Arts Index
    • ERIC
    • Polymer Library
    • Social Services Abstracts
    • Sociological Abstracts
  • EBSCOhost
    • Abstracts in Social Gerontology
    • Academic Search Elite
    • Business Source Premier
    • EconLit
    • International Bibliography of the Social Sciences
    • Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts
    • PsycARTICLES
    • PsycINFO
    • Regional Business News
    • Research Starters – Business
    • Research Starters – Education
    • SPORTDiscus
    • Textile Technology Index
    • Violence & Abuse Abstracts
  • LexisNexis Butterworths (On-campus and off-campus)
  • NexisUK
  • Westlaw

For all of these resources, Athens authenticated access will continue to be available for the time being, in parallel with Shibboleth-based authentication – although LLR will be promoting Shibboleth access (“Using your university username and password”) in preference to Athens.

Nexis UK and SFX

The SFX Knowledge Base has been updated to ensure that all newspapers and electronic journals that were previously individually listed on the Lexis Nexis Executive platform now redirect to Nexis UK. As all of the European Lexis platforms are still not yet OpenURL compliant, all of the title links only resolve the customer to the ‘homepage’ of the platform.
